Ginger, usually cultivated in Asia as a flavouring for savoury foods, was regularly shipped to Britain by The East India Company, where it became a popular flavouring in gingerbreads, biscuits and puddings. Biscuits were the most common staple on board The East India Company’s ships, as they sailed the world.
